When You're Not Reaping What You're Sowing

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

You reap what you sow.

Everything you put out in the world comes back to you.

The only way to receive is to go give.

Have you heard those sayings before?

And have you ever worked your biscuits off, gave of yourself to others, put out into the world exactly what you wanted in return only to get nothing, come up short, or feel overwhelmed, underappreciated, undervalued, or unworthy?

You’re not alone.

Quotes and sayings are catchy and inspiring, but sometimes their words can make you feel like you’re doing something wrong, or worse, that something is wrong with you.

Here’s the deal…if you’ve ever felt your you’re constantly depleting your tank and nothing is filling it up…you are energetically blocked to receive.

But there’s always good news…energetic blockages can be released and your ability to receive can be restored.

Different Aspects of Receiving

Receiving has to do with anything coming to you that fulfills your needs originating from a source outside of yourself.

Fulfilling your needs can have to do with love, kindness, money, material objects, safety, opportunities, and more

In Deepak Chopra’s book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, he talks about the Law of Giving, which could also be called the Law of Giving and Receiving. He says, giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of the Universe. So in theory, what you put out, you should get back. BUT, if you are blocked to receiving, you’ll find it difficult to feel balanced within this law.

Why You Might Be Blocked to Receive

With any energetic blockages, the sources can vary from person to person, and there could be more than one reason for these blockages. Often times the ability to receive is blocked through fear.

  • Fear of going against beliefs Does what I want and desire go against what my family wants for me, societal norms, religious teachings, etc.?

  • Fear of the unknown What will happen if all my needs are met? Will I have to make sacrifices? Will I be responsible enough to have what I desire? Am I more comfortable with how things are now and not ready for change?

  • Fear about the self Am I worthy to have my desires fulfilled? Who am I to get what I want? What will other people think of me when I have and experience what I desire? Will I turn into a different person when I have what I desire?

  • Fear from past experiences The last time someone gave me something, they wanted more than I could give or was comfortable giving in return. Anytime someone gives me or something or does something for me, they have ulterior motives. I was a victim of…if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

In addition to fears, ability to receive can also be blocked by low vibrating energy in your home. It’s often forgotten, but if you are actively trying to improve a situation or make things better for yourself and are still struggling, looking to the energy of your home is where you should look.

It’s also important to think about if you’re sending the right messages to the Universe or not. I learned this lesson the hard way.

Throughout many years of my adulthood, I was super awkward about money. Even when starting my own business, I struggled with deciding what to charge for my services and would more or less ask people if they were OK paying me for my services. I would even do lots and lots of free sessions. I also struggled with getting clients in the first place. Let me tell you, being awkward about money is not a helpful trait if you’re trying to run a business!

So I did exactly what any energy healer would do, I used energy healing to overcome my money awkwardness. I figured out I was not open to receiving. I did not feel worthy of receiving and it stemmed from past experiences.

Before my freshman year of college, I found out I was going to have a baby. I stayed in my hometown, went to school there, and my baby and I lived with my parents for a few years. They helped us out so much, not just financially, but in the major capacity of helping me raise my son and making sure that I was doing well.

After my son and I got a place of our own, my parents’ generosity continued, but I would never ask them for anything. They’d always ask if I was doing OK financially and would offer to help if I needed it, but I would usually say no.

My parents are famous for whipping a $20 out of their wallet and offering it to me or my sister (even to this day!). And I would usually say no, but they would tell me, if your parents are giving you money, you shouldn’t turn it down!

I realized through energy healing that my great dependence on my parents during the first few years of my son’s life made me want to be ultra-independent. I felt guilty about taking from them, even though it was offered. And I don’t think they ever felt put off or resentful for helping us. I felt like I needed to do everything on my own without help from anyone else. I found myself never asking for help, even if I could’ve used it.

Going through energy healing to help my struggling business, I realized I was blocked from receiving because of my self-worth issues, and I was sending the wrong messages to the Universe. I was essentially telling the Universe I didn’t want anything because when the opportunities to receive were there, I would often deny them. My truth, however, was that I did want support and I did want paying clients, contrary to what my actions were communicating to the Universe.

Healing around my ability to receive has made me far less awkward about money and way more confident in charging for the services I provide. It opened my ability to receive clients and get to do what I am most passionate and gifted to do in this life: help others. Today, if my parents want to give me money when I visit them, I graciously accept. If my partner asks if I want money when I’m leaving for the grocery store, I graciously accept! When people do things for me without me asking, I am grateful!

So ask yourself, are you sending the right signals to the Universe?

  • Do I turn down help from others?

  • Do I turn down money or gifts from others?

  • Do I feel uncomfortable receiving from others?

  • Do I automatically feel obligated to return a favor when someone does something for me?

  • Do I often redo something someone else did for me? (you know like, refold the towels your partner folded because you like how you fold them better, even though they folded them just fine?)

There are many possibilities for why you are blocked from receiving, but there are things you can do about it.

Ways to Overcome these Blockages

Try one, any, or all of these three ways to help you open yourself to receiving.

Affirm: I am open, willing, and worthy to receive that which I desire.

Words have power, that’s why affirmations are so popular. Write it down, say it out loud, speak it to yourself, whichever your favorite method, to absorb the frequency of this statement. I am open, willing, and worthy to receive that which I desire.

Check Your Doorways

I am not a feng shui expert, but I am a fanatic. How cool that you can move or arrange objects in your home in a manner that positively benefits your life! Symbolically, doors represent opportunity, so it’s important to be sure the doors in your home are working and looking their best.

Check both interior and exterior doors. Do they open and shut easily? Is there a broken screen or window? Make any appropriate repairs. Are there any obstructions or clutter in front or around them? (Do you trip over a bunch of shoes when you walk in?) Clutter disrupts the flow of energy, so you’ll want to clear it as soon as possible.

Change Up Your Giving Game

I know we talked about the feeling that you’re giving more than you’re getting, but changing up your giving game can help you to open your ability to receive.

When you give, do so with love and gratitude. Work on eliminating expectations of outcomes. If you buy something from a friend, don’t expect them to buy something from you. If you give your time to something, don’t expect that something will give you back your time. If you do something nice for your partner, don’t expect they’ll give you something you’d like in return.

When you give with love and gratitude, keep in mind your “reward” might not always come from who, what, or where you gave to. Another source could replenish your needs. For example, maybe you bought from a friend who didn’t buy from you, but you had 5 new customers this week. You just never know!

Send the Right Messages to the Universe

I know there is a lot of honor and reward in being super independent and accomplishing things on your own, but if there's something that could make your life a little bit easier or more joyful, ask the Universe to present those experiences.

Make sure if you are wanting more love, more kindness, more opportunities, more free time, more money, etc. that your actions are representative of that instead of denying those chances when they come to you.

There are many reasons why people become energetically blocked, but you can open yourself to receive that which you desire.

For Dowsers and Energy Healers

When I work with clients to open their ability to receive, I first check how open they are by measuring the frequency with a basic dowsing chart on a scale of 0-100. 0 would mean totally blocked and 100 would mean totally open. 100 is ideal.

I then check for sources of the blockage. It could be one, it could be many.

Then I always check in on self-worth and take a frequency of that on a scale of 0-100. 0 being no self-worth and 100 being the highest level of self-worth.

Next I check to see if there is any detrimental programming present (brainwashing, beliefs, etc.).

I see if there is anything else to be addressed and when there is not, I clear the blockages with my pendulum swinging as I repeat my clearing statement.

When the clearing is finished, I say thank you and check frequency again for both ability to receive and self-worth.

I then ask if another session is needed and make appropriate recommendations for my client.
