Try This | Weekly Tips for Experiencing Joy, Wellness, and Abundance

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

“Try This” is a weekly series providing tips and ideas to create joy, wellness, and abundance in your life.

Spring time! So much beauty, so much fresh air, so many sneezes and itchy eyes and scratchy throats…you know what I’m talking about!

In this edition of Weekly tips, I will share a total game changer in my household: the trio of lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oils.

Author’s Note: The following is my own personal testimony and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or illness. This is for informational purposes only and is no way intended to replace any medical advice.

My son had been diagnosed with seasonal allergies at a young age, and I was advised to give him Claritin to help him feel better. But the difficult part of using Claritin were the side effects he experienced. It made him so moody, angry, and just plain difficult. I would seriously debate which was worse: not feeling good because of allergies or not feeling good and acting like a jerk because of the Claritin.

Enter the allergy trio, stage left.

The “allergy trio” includes the essential oils of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint. I first started using this trio with my son several years ago. It was amazing how he was able to do things without a reaction, like be around horses, that we couldn’t do before. I remember one Christmas break he stayed longer than me with our family down in Arizona, and they told me they rode horses. “He didn’t have a reaction?” I asked. “No, he did great!” What a relief! Before oils, I remember picking him up from his equine program, racing over to Walmart and opening and administering Benadryl before I even paid for it.

There are three ways we use the allergy trio.

Aromatically: Diffuse 2-3 drops each of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint. If diffuser is not available, we apply 1 drop each to the palms of his hands, rub together, and inhale.

Topically: I like to make a roller bottle that is super easy to use when on the go. I mix equal parts of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint and top off with a carrier oil. If using a 10ml roller bottle like these ones, I start with 4 drops each of essential oil topped off with a carrier oil. Pro Tip: I like to reuse empty essential oil bottles to mix this combo and replace the top with a rollerball. My son applies the roller blend to his wrists, the back of neck, and behind the ears.

Internally: This is my preferred method. I combine 2-3 drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint essential oils labeled for dietary usage* and top off with a carrier oil in a vegetable capsule. I usually make about a week’s worth and store in the freezer. My son takes in the morning with breakfast. In a pinch, I’ve added two drops each of the essential oils to a spoonful of honey.

*Make sure any essential oils you choose to ingest are specifically labeled as a dietary supplement!
